Wedding Etiquette

Q. I became engaged over the holidays and plan to be married in 11 months. When should we put the engagment announcement in the newspaper?

A. You may announce your engagement as soon as you and your fiance are officially engaged and start making plans for the wedding. The announcment indicates the month in which the wedding will take place, however far in the future that may be.

Q. We are getting married during a holiday weekend. Should we send a "save the date" type of announcement?

A. If you have guests that travel out of town or make other plans during specific holidays, then go ahead and send an announcement letting them know the date of the wedding. It will give them plenty of time to plan ahead.

Q. Should I send individual invitations to a couple living together? How should it be worded?

A. Send one invitation placing the names in alphabetical order. The outside envelope should read:

Mr. Michael Garcia
Ms. Sandra Salinas

The inside envelope:
Mr. Garcia and Ms. Salinas

Q. I plan to invite some of my coworkers that I am close to, but worry about hurting the feelings of the other people who work with me. Are there some guidelines to help me with this?

A. Wedding guests should not be casual acquaintances, which is the relationship you have with the majority of coworkers. By all means invite those with whom you have social contact beyond the day to day workday routine. In fact, when you do not have a personal rapport with someone, it can be more of an imposition than a favor for that person to receive an invitation to your wedding.
