Can I Make My Own Wedding Video

Traditionally brides relied on a wedding photo album to remember the beautiful day, but as video recording equipment has become cheaper and more advanced, more and more couples are choosing to hire a videographer as well as a photographer, or even shooting a wedding video themselves. Having a video is a wonderful way to see some things in live action rather than still photography.

Pros and Cons of Doing It Yourself

Depending on your wedding budget, doing it yourself may be your only option. A home video is certainly better than no video, but there are several things to consider when making this decision.

Do you have a close friend or family member who would be willing to be responsible for recording everything you want on tape: the ceremony and part or all of the reception? Would they be willing to edit it themselves, or would you have to do that yourself?

What type of equipment do they have? Do they have the lighting and sound equipment that would be necessary to get a good quality video? Unless the main participants have microphones, it may be very difficult to hear what they are saying. If the ceremonies are dimly lit, your video may look very dark.

Consider Hiring An Expert

There are many wedding professionals whose expertise is in recording and creating wedding videos. Many experts record the event with several cameras to give themselves different angles on the same shot. They have the equipment to record in low light and low sound situations, as well as editing equipment to trim all the boring parts and make the final product a professional looking video, complete with music, softened pictures, voiceovers, and special effects. Obviously you will get a much nicer final product from a person like this.

A professional videographer will be an added expense. Only you can decide what this is worth to you, and whether the cost offsets having one more way to remember the day of your dreams.
